Devotional: Rest In Humility
"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" Proverbs 3:34
Humility is a funny thing!
The term "humility" comes from the Latin word humilitas, a noun related to the adjective humilis, which may be translated as "humble", but also "grounded, or "from the earth" since it derives from humus (earth)
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks states, that in Judaism, “humility is an appreciation of oneself, one's talents, skills, and virtues. It is not meekness or self-deprecating thought, but the effacing of oneself to something higher. Humility is not to think lowly of oneself, but to appreciate the self one has received.”
Rick Warren states,
“Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call "humble" nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. If you do dislike him it will be because you feel a little envious of anyone who seems to enjoy life so easily. He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all."
You are who you are.
You don’t need to fret about what others may think of you.
You don’t need to worry that you’re not being a good enough parent.
Accept who you are and how you are.
Made from the dust of the earth. Made by God - in his image - and for God.
Down to earth -
grounded -
earthy -
real.
Yes – in humility seek help, but that comes from a place of strength to reach out.
You don’t need to be anything that you are not – except a devoted life to developing Christ in you.
Nothing more.
Rest in Him.
Let go of pressure to be, do, or saying anything that doesn’t flow out of the real Christ in you today.
POINT TO PONDER:
Humility is not about thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less.
PRAYER:
Dear Father God, it so easy to put myself down rather than seeing who I'm made me to be in You. Thank you for never giving up on me and for seeing the best in me. Help me to rest today in that you pour your grace out on me. Anytime I move into being a proud person or parent, then you will oppose and resist me. I don't want that! Help me stay soft in your hands - You the potter, and I the clay. Thank you, in Jesus' name, amen!
