Devotional: The Power Of The Tongue

Bible verse: 

“Life and death are in the power of the tongue” Proverbs 18:21

Message:

We all know how the tongue can be both a blessing and a curse because it holds such power.

It’s such a small part of the body but can greatly impact our lives and those around us.

Words we say over ourselves:

...I’m so stupid

…I’ll never be good enough

Words we say over our children:

…you’re useless!

…shut up, you’re driving me crazy!

Words we say to our spouses:

…why can’t you do something to help for once?

…I wish I’d married someone else!

Maybe these are a bit extreme for you.

Maybe these are a bit close to the bone!

Either way, it’s very easy to hurt and bring chaos into our lives by the things we think, say and then do as a result. 

It’s also thankfully very possible to speak words that build up, that bless, that encourage, that spur one another on in love.

Point to ponder: 

How aware are you of the words and tone of words that come out of your mouth? Would you consider leaving the voice recorder on for a few hours to see? 

Prayer pointer:

“Dear Father God, it’s so easy to fall back into the rote comments, phrases and words that have been spoken to me or that I have picked up along the way. Help me to be aware of myself and how I affect others with the words I say, and how I say them. Fill me with your Holy Spirit today as I consciously go about my day and pay attention to what comes out of my mouth. Help me be honouring, kind and careful with my words. Thank you, for Jesus' sake and in His name, Amen!”
